Objectives

To describe the health status of Veterans and examine the relationships between their health-related quality of life, age, comorbidity, and socioeconomic and service-connected disability status.

Male patients who received medical care from a VA ambulatory clinic in the past 12 months

Recruitment Method

Random sample from a representative cross-sectional sample of patients receiving care at 4 VA facilities. Eligible patients were contacted via telephone for recruitment.

  • 8 dimensions of health status, including physical and mental health
  • Medical history
  • Depression screening measure
  • Socio-demographics, military history, VA eligibility

Data Collection Methods 

  • Mail questionnaire at baseline and quarterly follow-up questionnaires
  • Baseline along with 12- and 24-month follow-up examinations, including a physical examination, clinical assessments, and medical history taking
