Access Criteria 

CSPEC Durham has a temporary moratorium on accepting requests for CSP 585 specimens until a Request for Specimens (RFS) is prepared that prioritizes requests for these limited specimens.  If you would like to be notified when the RFS is released, please contact Ashlyn.Press@va.gov.

Objectives

  • To develop a cohort of U.S. Veterans who served in the military in 1990-1991
  • To create a data and specimen repository that can be used for future research
  • To test the feasibility of implementing a full-scale project of this kind

All Veterans who served July 1990 - August 1991, regardless of deployment or VA user status

Recruitment Method

10,184 Veterans identified by from the Department of Defense Manpower Data Center roster were contacted by mail, with an option to opt-out

Follow-up was conducted by phone to administer informed consent

Compensation

$50 American Express gift card

Data Collected

  • Blood sample (10-ml)
  • Permission to access VA and non-VA medical records
  • Survey data included demographics, military service history, lifestyle behaviors, physical and mental health indicators, family characteristics, and family health

Data Collection Methods

  • Survey data were collected via a structured questionnaire
  • Blood specimens were collected by a trained phlebotomist who visited the Veteran’s home or convenient location
